More information about field archery can be found at the web site of the National Field Archery Association at this address: http://www.nfaa-archery.org/field/info.cfm
The Suffolk Archers range is equipped with practice butts at distances from 20 feet to 80 yards to enable members to practice at all the standard distances typically experienced during a Field Archery Tournament.
Bowhunters and Field Archery Tournaments
While 3D animal target shooting may be the closest you can come to hunting without live game. Bowhunters who have participated in Field Archery Tournaments and Field Archery practice report that their shooting ability -- and hence their hunting ability -- has measurable improved.
The competition of Field Tournaments gets a bit of adrenaline pumping, making your holding, aiming and releasing feel much like what you experience during the adrenaline rush of an up-close-an-personal with a live deer.
You might not score as high as the tack drivers with their tripped out target bows, but who cares. You are really competing against yourself every time out. Field Archery scores are a great way to keep track of how much your shooting has improved. Besides, it’s just plain fun.
Bowhunters, come shoot a Field Archery Tournament. It’s free for members.
Beginners and Field Archery Tournaments
New to archery? New to Suffolk Archers? There is simply no better way to improve your shooting skills quickly and to make new friends, than to join in an Archery Tournament.
Beginners should shoot as many of these free tournament events as they can, and track their score event-to-event.
It’s also a great time to get shooting pointers from some of the best shooters in the Club.
Knock-a-Block
Knock-a-Block Tournaments at are open to the public as well as to all members of Suffolk Archers, but are limited to archers using only traditional equipment (recurves or long bows) and judo point arrowheads.
The Knock-a-Block course is set up at a variety of shooting distances, as well as a variety of shooting angles. Knock-a-Block targets are 5”x5” or 8”x10” foam blocks resting atop posts about 18 inches above the ground. As such, they emulate “stump shooting,” an activity in which archers walk through the woods shooting at tree stumps for fun and to sharpen their hunting skills. Two targets are set up at each shooting station and competitors shoot in pairs, with shooters alternating the first shot at each station. If the first shooter hits the block and knocks it off the post, a point is scored for that shooter and his opponent does not shoot at that station. If the first shooter misses, the opponent is allowed to shoot and could score the point for that station. That alternating pattern is repeated at each station. When all stations have been shot, high score wins that round. Then new competitive pairs are formed by matching the highest scorers in a “ladder,” and another round is shot. This pattern repeats until the overall winner is determined.
Traditional Equipment Events
Day in and day out, as well as during most tournaments, many members of Suffolk Archers shoot only traditional equipment -- recurves and long bows. Often you’ll see groups of traditional archers enjoying a few hours of shooting together. Just as often you’ll see mixed groups of archers using traditional bows enjoying the companionship of other members who shoot compound bows. We are all archers, and our courses are designed to make it fun for everyone.
However, twice each year there are tournaments open only archers using traditional equipment. One is the Knock-a-Block Stump Shoot and the other is The Long Island Traditional.
3-D Hunter
There is no better way to prepare yourself for a more successful hunting season than to become a member of Suffolk Archers, where you can shoot 3D animals targets every day of the year, so you never lose your edge. However, the icing on the cake is the annual hunting style 3D Hunter Shoot.
Silver Arrow 3-D Hunter
The Suffolk Archers Silver Arrow shoot is the last in the Club’s famous hunting season preparation program. Even members that have taken advantage of our 20-acre, year-round, full-time 3D course to stay sharp and be ready for their big hunt, shoot the Silver Arrow Shoot. It’s the final measure and the last chance to feel the adrenaline rush before a real hunt. Other members and many non-members, who may not have stayed as sharp as they would have liked, use this event to measure themselves against the hunting challenges that lay ahead. All are welcome.
Snowflake League
This may be the best cure for cabin fever ever invented. Get out of the house on six consecutive Sunday mornings for a quick round of 3D shooting and spend a few hours with good friends and amazingly good chow. And, you can still be home to spend most of Sunday with your family.
Each week a member volunteers to cook up a wild game dish that warms our innards after a brisk walk around the range, shooting two arrows at one or two 3D animals at each of about a dozen locations. It’s a 3D tournament that takes archery fun and camaraderie to a whole new level.
We shoot rain, snow or shine; mild, cold or frigid; but hazardous ice conditions or a blizzard could cause a cancellation, so if in doubt call 516 873-8898.
Special Events
From time-to-time something special and not previously scheduled pops up at Suffolk Archers. When possible, we will list such information here, in our Special Events section. Come back often; you never know what you might find.
